Call for Entries

Either write a short story which incorporates a Space Elevator in some way

Or create an artwork (eg painting, digital image, drawing etc) depicting a Space Elevator.

Maximum Length of Short Story

Stories should be not more than 2500 words (approximately five (5) A4 size pages single-spaced).

Maximum Size of Image

Submitted images should be in JPG format and, if submitted via the online form, not exceed 75 kb. The artists of the winning entries will be required to submit a 'print quality' high resolution image in TIFF or JPG format.

Language Requirements
The story should be written in English.

Submission Format
Please register and submit your entries electronically by using the Registation Form provided on this Web site. Note: Your entry must submitted in an acceptable digital format such as a TXT or RTF document for stories or JPG file for artwork).

Make sure that your entries contain the following personal information:
  • full name,
  • address,
  • phone number,
  • fax number,
  • e-mail,
  • date of birth,
  • sex,
  • and nationality.

Evaluation Criteria
The science fiction stories and artwork should relate to a Space Elevator and incorporate technologies and applications in some way. For example, imaginative use of the Space Elevator as a cheap access to space for launching oversize or fragile objects to distant planets, or for space tourism, or space exploration or terra-forming. ESA's Innovative Technologies from Science Fiction study (see the home page of this Web site) is a good source for such technologies and applications. However, participants need not limit themselves to this study and are free to look for inspiration and information from other sources as well.

The Jury will assess the entries in accordance with the following criteria:

  • Technology - convincing use of technology,
  • Imagination - innovative ideas and the ability to think "outside the box",
  • Structure - development of storyline, plot, characters,
  • Skills - clarity of expression, style, degree of realism.
  • Visualization - convincing depiction of the Space Elevator.

Open to: - space and science fiction enthusiasts and artists from all nations.

Maximum number of entries per person - One story and/or one artwork.
